First Day on the mission

A little can go a long way, And so starts my journey on blogger.

Hi, I go by the name Iain and I am a young composer, engineer / sound designer from Manchester, England.

This (I hope) will be my blog of my travels and projects over the coming months and maybe years.

For now though, A little background into what I have got going on at the mo.

Having had an old Soundtracs Pc 32 MIDI Series kindly bought for me, iv bin spending some of my free days working on that. The desk was an ebay purchase and I was fully aware that the desk would most likely need a bit of T.L.C. Bought at a very fare price from a nice chap called James in London the desk had spent the last year or so in a summer house at the bottom of his garden slowly dyeing, where it had bin placed after a revamp/upgrade of his home studio.

After getting the old girl into my house (which took some doing Il tell you, the thing is about roughly 80kgs) I then set about the task of returning this vintage piece of kit to something worth talking about.

Out came the tools....

Being an electronically competent person and the desk being a fully modular desk things weren't to scary at first, I soon had the thing in bits and the hoover out. But on putting it back together I hit my first fo-par.

Inside the desk were a series of looms that were in need of some cleaning as they were covered in rust and dirt. But as the looms and slots were previously labeled up clearly, I swiftly unplugged them and gave them a wipe down not noticing that the labelling wasn't fully correct. Upon Assembly.... No meter bridge! No 17+/- or 48v.... Panic!
Being out of options I decided I needed 'a Pro' to help me figure out what id "blown"/ Mistake id made, So I called Tim Jones at Studio Systems.

Tim is the uk's best hope when it comes to Soundtracs desks and like an experienced Jedi knight he helped me reason through the problems with the desk very patiently. After a small break and my brother popping round to help me with the desk (My brothers an Avionics Engineer) we figured that the labelling was incorrect and after swopping the two offending looms around all was well.

The Desk back together and working....

If you are thinking of getting a mid-sized console for a front end to your studio / B-room, or even just as a home/project piece of kit, I cannot vibe enough over how happy I am with this desk. Having used A Soundcraft Ghost and a Toft Atb before I can tell you that this just sounds and feels great. Though most of the Soundtrac desks you will find will need some attention the musically rich darkness of the E.Q's and smooth heavy duty hands on feel on the console is amazing. I am very pleased not to of ended up with another plastic fantastic Soundcraft/mackie desk, and the pre's have twice the head room of the Toft desk.
